This is lovely! It's really hard, with free verse, to keep the word pictures consistent, but you did a remarkable job with the imagery in this poem. I think my favorite image is "sharp whole notes that hang on grass tips." That is a painting all by itself!
Living in the Midwest, the Cricket Symphony is one to which became accustomed at an early age, but you have opened my ears again and caused me to remember my beloved grandfather. He wouldn't ever kill a cricket if one dared to enter my grandmother's house; instead, he would carefully take it and set it back outside. Then he would remind us that a cricket's job is to make music. Thanks for bringing that back to me.
I love the way you take the noisy chant and then lull us into the humming of the psalm as daylight comes. Nicely, nicely done.
