Joe,
I enjoyed your story-a chuckle at the end of a boring day...You have a gift for weaving the fantasies we protect (nearly with our lives) and the harsh realities of the world we did create into something amusing, albeit pathetic at times. I enjoyed the tempo of the story and the mixture of characters and settings to keep it fresh throughout. The hook for me was in the second paragraph- "the Present Under Every Tree Act." Ha! Keep it up, and if you get a chance, take a look at one or two of my short poems. I could sure use the feedback! Coal
It seems to me that we do not respect nor reward our oxygen-giving elders enough these days. You not only bring this to light in the naming of the "patriarch of subdivisions," evoking the common image of the few old trees developers are forced to preserve in these new housing tracts, you also add the irony of the power and security of shuffling around beneath the radar, the happy little bonsai, proud and satiated.
