A good old bit of slapstick accidental death & a bit of hide-the-stiff shenanigans never did anyone any harm - you could fill this out into a longer story. It would be good if you could find a fresh spin to put on the idea, because it's a goldie but an oldie. The final twist left me a little confused - I had to read the last line a couple of times before I realised we'd switched characters to Mable's interior dialogue.
It's an interesting topic which I think you could expand on - although I do feel like I've just read an entry in someone's diary. Identity is always a massive issue for most people, which is why so much fiction revolves around someone's quest to discover their own/someone else's real identity. Just out of interest, what age are you now, and what age is the woman/girl you feel you're a ragged image of?
This question has become very important to me since I moved abroad - I've been away for almost three years now - and I'm constantly trying to figure out how much of my personality comes from me, and how much comes from the Country I grew up in - it's history, popular culture, national identity, etc.
If this is a subject that really interests you - identifying a true identity - then you should pursue it, because if you can put a fresh spin on it, people will certainly want to read it!
All the best, Lee.
