I'm the lead editor for a small independent press, but I am on maternity leave for the next several years and thus not accepting submissions. I'll tell you my professional opinion on first chapters or short pieces and whether I would have accepted it or rejected it if I was looking for work. I've dealt most with controversial speculative fiction, and I'm most interested in polyamory a.k.a consensual non-monogamy.

Review of Twenty-Four Years

Welcome! I stumbled upon your work through the “read a newbie” feature.

I also have a jacket with a missing zipper. I wear it because it feels right. I have other jackets that I've tried to get comfortable with, but there's always something about them that is uncomfortable to me. Same with shoes. Actually, I stick with sandals (Teva brand) because I had a lot of texture issues with socks while growing up. PE was the worst part of my day for multiple reasons, one of which was being forced to wear closed-toed shoes with socks. Don't even get me started on underwear. Those, among other reasons, are why I'm seeking an autism diagnosis at the age of 35. I attended elementary school in Texas, and Texas has the lowest rates of diagnosed autism, but there is no known reason why there would be fewer autistic people per capita in Texas, so for now, it's logical to conclude that autistic people in Texas are often not diagnosed during childhood. I do, however, have special ed records for being "emotionally disturbed" and not being good at reading the body language of my peers. I was in special ed and gifted programs at the same time.

Anyway, it strikes me that this character shows some autistic tendencies as well.

Welcome! I stumbled upon your work through the “read a newbie” feature.

This was incredibly vivid and detailed. It brought up a lot of emotions for me as well. I suffered a lot less in terms of physical abuse, but the sleep deprivation from him yelling all night was the last straw. At the end, it wasn't so much about getting things for myself as it was about getting rid of things he thought looked good on me but didn't feel like me. Those things were a pretty small percentage of my wardrobe. Well . . . I did get an incense burner and some incense for me.

Happy writing, and I hope you enjoy it here!

Welcome! I stumbled upon your work through the “read a newbie” feature.

With housing prices so high these days, I can't think of anyone who cares if there was a murder at a place.

The grammar in the first few paragraphs was good, but then there were run-on sentences, among other issues. I recommend getting a program that reads aloud to you for proofreading purposes. I use Natural Reader since I bought it many years ago, but these days, you can get tts programs for free or simply access them from your browser. Here is a nice, free one: https://ttsreader.com/

Is this meant to be a test piece or a placeholder? I recommend drafting your story in a separate program such as MS Word, Open Office, or Google Docs and then copying and pasting it when you are ready to share it.

This was all quite intense, though I wasn't sure if it was the same narrator or different narrators, and if the person the narrator was talking about at the end was the same person the narrator was talking about at the beginning.

Review of Mind Trigger
Review by K5Rakitan
Rated: E | (5.0)
Hello! I found this through the random “Read & Review” feature.

This sounds very similar to the PTSD I'm experiencing. My ex-boyfriend kept me awake all night yelling, so now when my husband wants to discuss something serious late at night and starts raising his voice, I flee next door to my parents. My parents didn't live next door when I was with my ex-boyfriend, but my dad drove two hours to come pick me up when he found out I hadn't gotten any sleep. I'm in individual therapy, and we have a family therapy appointment coming up.

Thanks for sharing your writing :)

Welcome! I stumbled upon your work through the “read a newbie” feature.

You’ve painted a vivid picture with your words. Thank you for taking me on this journey with you. This actually reminds me of someone I haven't thought about in a long time, though it wasn't quite in a prison setting. She was my ex-boyfriend's meth buddy. I only learned that she had known him before I did after breaking up with him.

Happy writing, and I hope you enjoy it here!
