This is a lovely and uplifting story. Your combination of the science-fiction and fantasy genre is brilliant. The characters travel from a post-apocalyptic, deadly and dark world to a realm of life, beauty, mystery, legends and magic.
They begin their journey in search of a mythical power, a magical and (perhaps) easy solution to all of their problems. Instead, they end up on an even greater journey in which mankind has to take responsibility for it's own actions. There's an important message in your story to the real world. The story catches the reader's attention from the very start, and draws them into another world. The description of the bond between the characters Chris and Kat is heartwarming. The shifting between what feels like the past and the future is eerie and it really adds depth to the story.
There is one thing I think could be an improvement to the story, and that is in regard to the other members of the group. It's like they kind of fade in the background and disappear along the way, and it feels like something is missing there.
Regardless, this is but a minor thing.
