Funny story! I can relate to this story because as my children have left home, I seem to be acquiring more and more animals to take their place, including a husky/German shepherd mix that sheds massive amounts of fur year-round. I loved your very sensory descriptions in what it is like to live with dog hair. My only question is that your main character repeated twice "a thousand kinds of fun." I'm not sure why she said this or where this statement came from. Great work!
An amazing story in only 1000 words! I can easily see how this work could also be turned into a novel or screenplay if you wanted. Normally I would expect a story to include more descriptions of the scene and the characters (or at least give the characters names!), but in this short-short story format I think it's perfect the way it is! I'm looking forward to reading more of your work.
Wonderful imagery! I especially like the part about how all other living creatures avoided the tree--I sense that the tree has a long history and somehow Nick's history is going to intertwine with the tree's. You might also want to describe the tree a bit more--I know it was big, but what did it look like? What did it feel, sound and smell like? I get the feeling that this is just the first page of a much longer story--there isn't any developed plot yet. Great work! I hope you keep going and tell us more of the story!
Why would I laugh? It's a beautiful yet tragic piece about a young girl who finds that cutting herself gives her control when her life and emotions are chaotic and out of control. The only part that I'm a bit confused about is at the end when she says "I once said that I wanted to be fourteen forever." I'm not sure what she would mean by that--that she didn't want to grow up or that she wanted her life to end? Great work!
