Wow. I love a good scary story and this one definitely hits that mark. Very powerful emotions and images in this story, it really sticks with you. I am quite fond of the idea that you presented that being tired and worn down sort of provides a weakened barrier for evil to break in through. It reminds me somewhat of the premise in Stephen King's "It" that evil can fill up the empty places inside a person. The final part for me was the most terrifying; the main character is presented as very hard-working, an all around good guy that is just trying hard to provide for his family and I think most of us can relate to that. The feeling of knowing something horrible is going to happen but being unable to prevent it, coupled with the realization that this good guy is probably going to be the tool with which these horrible things happen despite being at heart a good person is very powerful. Very good work, I look forward to reading more from you!
I really enjoyed this piece. I think most of us can relate to the main character's struggle, I know that personally I'm quite fond of fantasizing of just running away from time to time :) I think this is something everyone can relate to, choosing between a path that's safer and a path that is more satisfying. I'm not sure if it was intentional, but I loved that Abby's and Anna's names where so similar, sort of showing the world of difference a few choices can make, as if the women themselves were the difference between left and right. I also appreciate an ending that is left open, I know which way I hope the main character turned, and I'm sure I'll be thinking of him again. Very good job!
