Interesting story, love the bit about falling asleep on the bus. Not sure about "drug me by the hand" though, in England we'd say "dragged me by the hand".

Due to illness I missed most of my 1st year at school. When I returned, it was mid-1939 and we had regular 'Air Raid' practices. The whole lot of us, teachers as well, going down steep steps into the shelter underground. We also had to practice at putting our gas masks on, not pleasant at all.
So long ago but I can remember it clearly and the shelter's damp musty smell.

Liked the theme, not sure about the abruptness of the narative, though the descriptions are good.
