Hello Community! I am an out of work technical writer. I have been searching for work, but with no luck for over 24 months now. The job scene has changed since the last time I was out of work, in 2002-2003. No company wants to hire directly. So the only way I seem to get noticed by pharmaceuticals (my employer of choice) is if a recruiter finds my resume on a search engine. There are weeks when I get numerous emails for the same or more positions. Then weeks pass with little activity. I am also searching sites like CareerBuilder.com, Startwire.com, and Jobs4Jersey.com for direct hire positions. I find plenty of positions to which I respond, but I don't usually get replies. I am registered with the New Jersey One Stop and get a lot of support in the way of workshops and speakers. They update unemployed workers on interview techniques, resume styles, job search boards, and networking tips. The attendees in my group are mandated to conduct weekly job searches. We document our search on log sheets, which we bring in each week, proving we conducted our search of at least 20 unique job postings. I have reached out to more than 200 recruiters and/or employers for new job postings over the past three months. From my effort, I have had three interviews (one in person and two phone), but still no offers. Trying not to get depressed, I try to make my search interesting. I find new companies every week, which I apply to if they offer a position remotely close to my background. Today, one of my Facebook friends posted on her timeline the following: "I like cooking my family and my pets. Use commas. Don't be a psycho." She had posted an advertisement for Writing.com. Boy did I laugh! This reminded me that I had once been a member of this group. But due to inactivity, I was de-activated. So, I thought it was past time to re-join. I hope this message isn't too long for the group. But I want to stay honest in my job search. Posting updates here is one way I can do that! I look forward to reading community postings, learning from and sharing with the group, and finding items of interest here. Thank you for reading my introduction. Regards, Susan Lee |
