I have recently started my own community magazine with news from groups and organisations in the area, contributions from local writers, local news and sport, yesteryear photographs, cartoons, quizzes, etc. I had 200 printed of the first issue and it sold out! I had it in a few small shops - the big ones didn't want to know. The only publicity I had was Facebook - amazingly the page got over a hundred likes! If you would like to see it it's http://www.facebook.com/IlkestonLife. |

As I write this, my poem The Storm has had 94 viewings but only 2 ratings. It was the first piece I put on my portfolio and is probably my own personal favourite. It was inspired by the title of Iris Murdoch's novel The Sea, The Sea and the Bible story of Jesus stilling a storm. The words started to come to me as I looked out to the vast sea from the beach at Skegness, UK. It was a great disappointment that so few people reviewed it and was not a good start to my experience at writing.com! |
It's satisfying when someone says they like what you have written, and of course it is a spur to keep on writing. So when reviewing other people's work I try to look for the good things they have written and praise them for it. It may be that a piece is not very well written but it is interesting. It may be full of spelling or grammatical errors but there's something honest and likeable about it. Sometimes I read something and it inspires me to do something similar. |
Well, I have had one or two successes with my writings. By that I mean some people have liked them. I have been surprised sometimes. My favourites have not been other people's favourites, but that's life. A couple of poems, A Prisoner Finds Forgiveness and By the Water's Edge have brought best responses from reviewers. What people say in their reviews are very important to me - thank you to those who have been encouraging. |
