Sounds like you signed up with one of those vanity presses. Such as described here: http://theworldsgreatestbook.com/self-publishing-vanity-publishing/
Aww... Dreams have a price, I suppose. Kudos on writing a novel at all.
*sigh* back to the drawing board for getting published. Oh well
My first novel has been accepted by a NY publishing house!!! I'm so excited!!

I don't know whether to congratulate you or really not like you! *Laugh*
Totally envious! *Envy*
Congratulations, my friend! *Bigsmile*
Thank you :)
*squeals excitedly, hugging you* Congratulations! I'm so happy for you.
I have all of this time to write, but I sometimes get board with it. Not so much board with the story, more like board with the sitting here staring at a computer screen. I want to do something different but with money as tight as it is there really isn't anything else to do. *sigh* oh well. Even with this I am making great progress!

Congratulations, that's what, 450-500 pages?

I was stuck trying to figure out how to make the opening scene in one of my stories nice and punchy. In the end, the idea I hit on was to start the story a day earlier. It was totally unncessary as far as the plot was concerned, but it allowed me to set the scene and begin revealing the world I had created while also adding stuff for impact and to begin raising questions in the reader's mind.

Sometimes you just need to approach things in a different way. I assume you have done some world building, and I assume you have created a believable character. The interaction between these two is ripe with possibilities for the start of any story, and you don't have to begin with the plot. Good luck!
It is 343 pages in Word. I don't know what it would be in paperback form.

Thank you for that wonderful idea, Zen!
I am nearly done with the last edit of my novel. It weighs in at 184,320 words currently. I am trying to get it to about 185K words. Wish me luck!

Boy am I tired, and sick. LOL I read this and thought you said "cut it to 185K words" *FacePalm*. I had to read it like 4 times before I read it right. LOL
lol. I'm sorry to hear that you are sick, I hope you get better soon.
Good luck! *Shamrock*
How do you write an outline for a story? I just don't understand the way that you start it. Hell, I don't even know what the story is going to be about LOL

Oddly, though as necessary in writing as in anything else. You would not say it just needs a beginning, middle, and an end. In writing there are rules which are often akin to those rules of having a feeling about something. Here you'll definitely find answers. For starters it appears that you establish a situation, and your protagonist(s) must surmount an obstacle, setback, or something wrong. There are many ways, but if you really want to get to know. You will learn. Look up something called 'camp nano.' That should help.
Thank you very much.
Does anyone actually review when requested? I requested a review from three people and none of them responded........ *Confused*
Actually I deleted them. I know it was most likely a rash decision, but I had someone give me some advice. I need to take my story off of these sites if I am going to actually publish it.

I aologize about any inconvenience.
J.L.G Author Icon It is possible to lock down items so only selected people can see them. But the bigger goal, getting people you trust to give reviews, is more likely to be achieved with a critique group either online or off. I have a writing group which is hosted at a local indie bookstore. It was started by a writer who wanted support, and didn't want to join a long-standing group where everybody was more advanced. I'd look around and see if you can find a critique group that works for you, or try starting one if you are anywhere near a bookstore. Ours just posted a note in their newsletter, and the first meeting had five people, all of whom are still in it three years later. Others have joined, some have only been there briefly, others have stayed. But we all know and trust each other, so we share chapters and talk about issues and celebrate successes.
That is a great idea! Thank you.
Looks like I may need surgery on my right wrist. *Sob* I may not be writing for a while afterwards. Damn!
I have had friends read my writings and they enjoyed it but putting it on here for strangers to review? Yeah, I'm nervous. I'm more worried about them not liking it.

Not to worry J.L. Some may not. So what? Many will and most importantly, you'll get honest feedback, some thing friends don't always do. You may get praise, you may get suggestions for improvement, you may get eggs thrown at you (OK, I'm joking about the last *Laugh*). What is it that you're looking for? If you want to improve your skills, then post. If you want unconditional acceptance ... buy a dog *Rolling* Take a chance. You may surprise yourself. Ken *Bigsmile*
Thank you both! I know that I want to improve my skills, so I posted the first two chaptters on here.
