Hi everyone, obviously I'm new here and pretty overwhelmed by everything. I just want to attempt to write a decent book maybe a series. But I don't know how long the chapters should be, or even how many chapters I should do. |
There is no hard and fast rule to give you. The question you should ask yourself is: how long of a chapter do you like reading in a book? I once read a book that had very short chapters. Sometimes, a chapter was only a half page. The way those short chapters ended kept me up and reading all night long. On the other hand, I also recently finished a series of three books in which the chapters were several pages long, maybe 20 or so. Those chapters had a lot of content, but they also ended on a cliffhanger that made me want to keep reading on. So, how long your chapters are really depends on the pace you want to set and how much story you want to put into each chapter. Whatever you choose to do, I recommend sticking to one style of chapter length. That doesn't mean all you chapters have to have the exact same page numbers, but if you're going for multi-page chapters, maybe keep them "around" a similar page number. So 5-10 or 7-12 or whatever works best. |
Seriously, though, I find that reading back through some stuff I've written (not necessarily the story being worked on) sort of reignites the passion. But it might just reignite the passion for the story you read, not the one you need to work on. The idea behind reading another is that it's not as fresh so you can enjoy it almost like an outsider and even better if that's an incomplete project! You get ideas floating through your head and a need to get back into writing.
This works for me but it might not work for anyone else. We're all different, after all.
