The Caffeine Dilemma

If I could without being judged, I'd hook myself up to a hospital drip. Forget the blood of life, give me straight caffeine. I'm not talking about the stuff in a jar; I'm talking about it being ground, dripped and the milk heated to a precise temperature and texture. And if the barista is good enough, please impress me with your milky artwork while I secretly try to remember the technique to mimic at home. Thanking you all in advance.

I was out with some friends when expressing my love for coffee. I was excited to catch up with them, since it had been a possible year since our last encounter. But I was possibly more excited to get my first hit of caffeine that day. I'd held off the entire workday without it. That's a big feat for me.

I knew the cafe we were headed to. For anyone interested, the place we went to is Laurent. It's a cafe chain, much like Starbucks or Gloria Jeans. I've been to them all. If I'm to be honest, they don't make the best coffee nor the worst. And to my American friends from my Australian opinion, your Starbucks is the worst of all.

I don't remember the origin of where or who I heard this from, but they say Melbournians are caffeine addicts and we are known to produce amazing coffee. I don't know about the first statement but as for the latter, I'm on the skeptical side recently.

Here's where I vent.

Dear Cafe's of Melbourne, I am frustrated by your inconsistency. I'm disappointed that you serve me exact reflections of how much you don't care about your job in my cup; burnt-out or weak and flavorless. I hate how you have one good barista and many inexperienced fill-ins. But the one thing that pisses me off more than anything (amazing barista or not), is when I ask for sugar (when you remember to put it in) and you don't stir through; much less give me a spoon.

Is this magic sugar? Is it meant to stir on its own? Is there even sugar in this? Or is the last mouthful meant to explode with a sweet yet disgusting surprise?

The list of repeating offenders is too large to name, but I have something better in mind.

Need a good coffee? Go to Jasper or up and rising Degani's.

You're welcome.
