Sorji is querying! - Can't help you there. My ongoing impression of the Community Newsfeed is that there's always something going on and someone saying something about it, but I don't categorize the activity into personal posts vs site news vs contest announcements.
Are you looking at your personal newsfeed or the community newsfeed? The personal newsfeed is the default view and it only shows people that you've favorited or fanned. If you're finding the newsfeed a little quiet, you can always favorite/fan new authors or switch to the community newsfeed view. There's definitely a lot of contests and activities being promoted, but also plenty of people posting other comments, links to blog entries they've made, etc.
The old Writing.com Discord is gone. I'm not aware of a currently active one that's open to the entire community, unless people have started a new one that I don't know about...
