I know we live in an era dominated by the Big Box stores but there are still plenty of smaller, independent booksellers out there as well. Recently, I had a chance to visit a Mennonite bookstore where they have most of their inventory published locally. Which means you can't really find it online. And they have an entire section dedicated to old and used books, some of which are of high value for anyone interested in antique books. |
| Recently, I've back to reread a classic that I adored in my childhood. Wilson Rawl's Where The Red Fern Grows, a story about a young American hillbilly boy who grows up with two redbone coonhounds. A lot of people remember Rawl's work from middle school, but a lot of people don't know that Rawls actually needed the help of his wife to finish the manuscript. Having been born in early, 20th century Ozarks, Rawls hadn't received much in the way of a real education. His original manuscript had numerous spelling and grammatical errors. And no punctuation! Luckily, Rawl's wife had received education and she became his editor. Thanks to this dynamic husband-wife duo, schoolchildren across America get to enjoy the story of The Hounds Of Youth. That was the original name for the book before it was changed to Where The Red Fern Grows. |
