I have read in a few places that a writer can't expect to meet his, or her, potential until they have written a million words. I'm not sure what my total word count is at the moment. If I had to guess, which I don't, but I'm going to anyway, I'd say I'm at around 250,000. There's no doubt I've improved. I hope I haven't peaked yet. What do you all think? Is a million words about right? What do you suppose your total word count is right now? |
There's the rule of 10,000 that says no one can expect to be an expert at anything until they have 10,000 hours of practice at it. (or something like that) I'm not sure how many words 10,000 hours amounts to. I guess it would depend upon the person writing. If I don't have distractions I can crank out about 5,000 words in 7 - 8 hours but for the sake of argument I'll round that to 10 hours which would equate to roughly 5,000,000 words ... I think. I auto-reward for reviews of all my items and it usually works just fine. I'm not wildly happy about having paid for the following review I just received though: "this was a gooddddddddddddddddddddddd storyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy" Really? Thanks for that. |
I sold my first article last month and it has just been published! http://www.toptenz.net/top-10-female-aviators-who-werent-amelia-earhart.php |
Thank you so much Elle - on hiatus for gifting me a `Big Bang' review package from `The Power Review Shop'. You are most kind. It is much appreciated. |

Just a week left to go for anybody who may wish to enter my first contest
I've had three great entries for the first round, but I'd love to see a few more to make it more competitive. New or existing pieces accepted so long as they meet the prompt. |
I've had a piece of flash fiction published! It's now available in `The Darker Time Collection Volume 2' available in paperback and ebook from Amazon. |
I found a fascinating resource which I thought you might like to take a look at. It examines your text for readability and assigns it a score out of 100 (with 100 being most readable and 1 being least). It also lets you know the youngest age group who would be expected to be able to confortably read the text (eg. 12-13). Just go to the `direct input' tab and enter the text. I've enjoyed comparing a few of my stories. http://read-able.com/ |
Thanks for link. It is interesting. I plugged in paragraph I did for spring in South Florida (see comment to Jeff Maine) and this read-able site came back with a score of 76. Some of the analytic scoring terms I don't understand.... Flesch Kincaid Reading Ease 76 Flesch Kincaid Grade Level 6.9 Gunning Fog Score 9.2 SMOG Index 6.8 Coleman Liau Index 8.1 Automated Readability Index 6.2 |
I think they each examine the text based on slightly different criteria. Most of my pieces seemed to come in at around 70-80. I pasted in some James Joyce and it came in at 50. |
Something like www.todayifoundout.com.
Lovely start, friend :)
