Summary of this Book...
Commentaries on the different nooks of the Bible can be divided into two categories: application and reference. The JPS Torah commentary falls safely and squarely into the second category. The top half of each page will consist of a side by side Hebrew and English version of the text, while the bottom half of each page will have discussions concerning definition of different words in Hebrew, contextual discussions and cross references of different passages, etc. I cannot stress the degree of detail the discussion of words, passages, etc., will go into.
This type of Book is good for...
If you’re doing a study of Numbers, this is a great book to have on hand if you’re concerned about the correct translation of a word/passage, or wondering about relevant Talmudic discussion on a verse, etc.
I especially liked... | ||
It is very matter of fact about what problems arise over certain passages, and gives very detailed explanations on the resolutions of those problems (tense of a verb, rabbinical discussion, etc.)
I didn't like... | ||
This is not a commentary for casual study. Even for a more in-depth study, it works better as a reference to be consulted during your study of. Numbers, rather than a guide on how to study Numbers.
When I finished reading this Book I wanted to...
Keep it on my shelf to have it ready as a reference. This is not a book to study Numbers, but it’s the best book to aid in the in-depth study of the Book of Numbers.
This Book made me feel...
More than a little overwhelmed, and unapologetically pointed out the gaps in my education.
The author of this Book...
Jacob Milgrom was a prominent American Jewish Bible scholar and Conservative rabbi. Besides Numbers, he was also noted for his studies of Leviticus and the Dead Sea scrolls.
I recommend this Book because...
If you really want to dive deep into Numbers, this is the book to have on hand.
I don't recommend this Book because...
If you’re doing a casual study of Numbers, this is the sort of book that will bog you down in details and probably drive you away from Numbers altogether.
