Milton Meltzer a writer of nonfiction for young people gives readers insight into his life about growing up in Worcester, Massachusetts, the child of immigrants from the Austro-Hungarian empire, and his coming-of-age during the Depression is detailed for readers to understand how this effects his writing future. after graduating from Columbia university, he worked at the Works Progress Administration and as an air traffic controller in World War II.

This story about how he started, why it was important to him, and how long it took him to be able to work full-time as a writer will captivate anyone who enjoys reading about writers. He clearly and vividly shares personal details about how he responded to the events that had an impact and molded and shaped his life. Readers will gain knowledge from his writing and his life and get to know who he is and what guider him to accomplish his goals and realize his dreams..

A reader who wants to be entertained by the typical fictional style of writings might find this book unfulfilling and perhaps become disillusioned before completing the reading of this writers story.
