Summary of this Book...
"In a twisty page-turner for fans of Sadah Pinborough, Megan Goldin, and Melinda Leigh, New York Times bestselling author Kat Martin melds psychological thriller and ghost story as one woman’s daring search for the truth tests the dividing line between life and death.

If you need help, we are here for you.

Eve St. Clair desperately needs help sorting reality from her fearful imaginings when ghostly voices seem to haunt the Victorian house in Sunderland, England, that she inherited from her uncle. Online research leads to a group that claims to offer just the aid she’s seeking. But can Ransom King’s handpicked team of investigators truly banish Eve’s night terrors?

Since the deaths of his wife and daughter, Seattle billionaire Ransom King has devoted himself to researching parapsychology and debunking the frauds who prey upon the bereaved. But Eve is a psychologist herself, clearly sane, and her sincerity is palpable. King senses a very real danger stalking the beautiful divorcée. As his interest in her case turns deeply personal, he will move heaven and earth to uncover the truth—no matter how shocking—and save the woman he loves."

Further Comments...
This was really different from the other Kat Martin books I've read. I wasn't prepared for the horrible things that happened to the children in the book and I almost couldn't believe that the non-paranormal parts really happened in real life (albeit many years ago).

SPOILER - please skip down two paragraphs if you don't want to have spoilers.

The historical fact that 183 children were killed in the incident this fictional book involved was really disturbing, to say the least. I literally cried when I read how these poor kids died.

However, if you can get around that, the mystery and romance were nice elements. I really liked King's whole team and the reason he put it together, as well as most of the characters.

I didn't see that this was part of a series, but it would make a good series. A romance for each of King's team members along with amazing mysteries to solve would be neat.

King's emotional growth in the book was great.

The heroine, Eve, was just great in general.

I loved that all of the adults on Eve and King's side were willing to do whatever it took to get the children peace and freedom. I really can't imagine any moral person who wouldn't want that, but would they put their lives on the line for it?

I borrowed this book from my local library, so maybe yours carries it as well. It's 290 pages, so not overly long. It was action-packed enough that I didn't feel tempted to skip forward or skim.

As of 5:41pm on September 24, 2024, the book ranked quite high on the Amazon best sellers list:

"Best Sellers Rank: #1,735 in Kindle Store (See Top 100 in Kindle Store)

#13 in Horror Suspense
#23 in Suspense (Kindle Store)
#26 in Thrillers (Kindle Store)"

So I'm clearly not the only fan of Kat Martin. I only found her recently though. Either this year or last year. I have liked everything I've read by her so far except for the one book in her Mercury Rising series. I didn't read more from that series as I just am not up for more pandemic stuff. It's not that her writing was bad, I just didn't want to deal with the topic.

There's a wait list for this book, so once I submit this review I'll return my copy so someone else can read it. If you use your local library, I highly encourage you to return wait listed books as soon as you're done with them for the same reason.

Happy reading!
