Sixteen year old Emilie runs away from home, and in attempting to stow away on a ferry to get to her cousin's home, ends up trapped on a "ship" that travels by magical means to the Hollow World at the center of the earth. She befriends people of another species and finds her courage as she and her travel companions seek to rescue the philosophical magician who was lost in Hollow World on a previous mission and then try to return to their own world. Emilie faces dangers alone and with new friends as they venture through unknown lands, proving her inner strength and usefulness to herself and her companions.

Middle school on up to adults.

It's a fun, fast-moving adventure story with a small amount of violence and a lot of recognition that a teenage girl can be capable and even an asset to an adventure team.

Martha Wells is one of my favorite authors - I have read her two of her series several times over: "The Fall of Ile Rien" and the "Tales of the Raksura." Both of those were very different from each other.

It's a fast-paced easy read with some fun twists and turns, with a young, strong-willed girl as the protagonist.
