In 1940, Anna Dale from New Jersey wins a contest to paint a mural for the post office of Edenton, North Caroline. She later disappears.

In 2018, Morgan Christopher's dream of a career in art has been delayed due to being imprisoned for a crime she did not commit. When a mysterious visitor makes her an offer of restoring an old mural in a post office in a southern town in return of being released early from prison, she accepts.

Two POVs weave together the stories of two different women who have the love of art in common. But what really happened to Anna Dale who found herself immersed in a town where people hid secrets and racism was apparent? Had someone murdered her?

Morgan discovers clues in the mural, but she also must overcome her own demons.

I did not see the ending coming, which makes me like it even more! I loved the ending!

I couldn't stop thinking about this novel after finishing it. Wow.
