Jia Tolentino’s book “Trick Mirror” is an intellectual and stimulating collection of essays, each one thought-provoking and personal. Tolentino is a writer for the New Yorker, and her skill and sharp wit clearly show in this work. Her writing is so strong are carefully crafted it is a pleasure to read. Tolentino is a cultural critic and is able to write about reality television, religion, politics, feminism, sexual assault, and more with equal and unwavering brilliance. Her exploration and questioning in her essays are easy to follow, but challenging in that they force self-reflection and ask the reader to look into the “Trick Mirror” of self-delusion we regularly and often unknowingly view ourselves through. Tolentino pulls us away from that narrow lens and reveals the history and truths of hard topics not often explored. On top of it all, Tolentino is a superb writer. Each phrase is lyrical and descriptive, allowing enough artistic flourish to keep the reader engaged, while at the same time putting to words emotions and inner monologues that are so often hard to articulate. Very well done commentary on our world by a critical thinking millennial. | ||
