Summary of this Book...
The series Spells, Swords, & Stealth takes place in a D&D-like world, where four men, a Paladin, a Barbarian, a Rogue, and a Wizard, enter a tavern, order a big drink, toast to The Quest, quaff their tankards, only to fail their Constitution check. In the Real World, four young men roll up new characters. Back in the Tavern, those dead guys are dead! Now it's up to 4 unlikely characters to take their places, and become Adventurers themselves, shaking the very foundations of their world.
This type of Book is good for...
If you're a fan of D&D, Pathfinder, Fantasy RPGs, or Fantasy in general.
I especially liked...
How the usual class/race expectations get shaken up. The roles the characters have to fulfill are Paladin, Barbarian, Rogue, and Wizard, and the main characters are a town guard, a strong half-orc, a gnome with a questionable past, and a noblewoman - when they try the expected roles, they don't do so good. Turns out, guard is sneaky without armor, half-orc has a good memory for spells, gnome is a devout follower of the God of Minions, and the noblewoman has anger management issues.
I didn't like...
There is more than a bit of strong swearing. To be fair, the main Real World characters are older teens/young adults, and the main SS&S characters are adults.
When I finished reading this Book I wanted to...
Read the others in the series.
This Book made me feel...
Like I could come up with a bunch of crazy characters for my own D&D-type stuff.
The author of this Book...
Clearly knows his fantasy RPG stuff.
I recommend this Book because...
It's a good way to understand fantasy RPGs without getting too invested in a game system.
Further Comments...
Currently, there's 4 books in the series, NPCs, Split the Party, Going Rogue, and Siege Tactics. All are worth the read.
