World War I hero Pete Banning won't tell anyone why he murdered the preacher. The journey is gripping throughout the entire story, answers sought, old wounds opened, new wounds discovered. But why did he murder the preacher? This question is the motivation for the entire book and will keep you reading (or listening) to the very last word. With an executed war hero, his wife in an institution, their adult children looking for answers, and the preacher's wife suing for the land that's been in the Banning family for generations... there is never a dull moment.

Anyone interested in WWI, courtroom trials, families who keep secrets.

Michael Beck did a great job narrating this story.

Too long! I invested 18 hours of listening to this story while traveling and was very disappointed with the ending. Neither my husband or I was satisfied with the outcome after all the time it took to get there.

I wanted to rewrite the ending! I realize not all stories have fairy tale endings, but I feel cheated with this one.

I felt exhausted after going through the entire journey of wondering why Pete Banning murdered the preacher. And very frustrated with the ending.

Very well written. Keeps you on the edge of your seat as you wait for the secrets to come out.

It has a crappy, unsatisfactory outcome. I've listened to/read other books that I didn't especially like the ending, but this book just makes me wish I'd never wasted my time.
