I picked this up off my son's bookshelf while I was dog-sitting and had forgotten my tablet at home. I am pleasantly surprised with the book. I had no expectation going in, except that zombies generally scare the heck out of me. What I found so intriguing about the book is yes, the stories held my attention, but what really frightened me was how it was veil for the current politics of the time (and probably again to an even greater extent). I'd say it's a not inaccurate account of what could happen in the even of a societal breakdown - the reality is anything could be our 'zombie': another plague or flu, a banking meltdown, a world war where allies fall apart (or are driven apart). The socioeconomic/political question is always just that: what IS your zombie? Many of the stories were deeply touching, though some felt a bit flat. I can't say that the critiques of the book indicating the voices sound similar throughout are completely wrong. I also can't argue that the style is not going to be everyone's cup of tea. I enjoyed the historical recount ("telling"), and while there is zombie fodder throughout, it's not your typical 'running from the throngs' character follow-along, and I thought this was a nice spin on the theme. | ||
