Everyone should read “The Last Lecture.” Despite the somber foundation on which the book is written (the author has terminal cancer and is writing the book as a last goodbye to his three young children), the book is crammed full of sage advice, humor, and witty intelligence. I honestly couldn’t put it down.

Randy Pausch knows how to live life to the fullest. He was asked to give a “Last Lecture” at Carnegie Mellon where he was a Computer Science professor, and instead of dwelling on the sad things he was dealing with, he chose to speak about his childhood dreams and how he managed to fulfill each one. He spoke of his family and his passions, about his students and helping them fulfill their goals. After reading the book, I went on to watch his speech on YouTube, and he is just as hysterical and intelligent as he comes across in the book.

Despite the speech being slightly aged, the messages all continue to ring true. Pausch has a way of pulling the deeper meaning out of every experience, and there are so many quotes in the book that I want to go back to save so I can share them with others later. I imagine you too will find several nuggets of advice in this book that are worth repeating.

I originally bought this book for my sister when she graduated high school. While the book is perfect of course for students as they are graduating from one stage of their life to another, it is also perfect for the rest of us. As a perpetual student myself, I love learning and Pausch is a professor I wish I could have learned from. The next best thing is reading his Last Lecture and listening to him speak on stage. I highly recommend this quick read.
