I read this book after seeing the film, and overall I enjoyed it. The description and detail in the book is amazing; the author really paints a vibrant picture of the culture, which is a treat to read. There are a few too many characters for my tastes in the book. In that respect, I think the movie did a great job of paring it down to only those who were crucial to the main narrative. Still, it was an enjoyable, well-written read in the "rich, exotic fantasy relationship" genre.
