This is a book in the Maisie Dobbs Detective series. This one takes place as 1931 draws to a close So many who fought in WWI are displaced and without jobs and hope. An ungrateful nation casts them aside to fend for themselves.

One of these individuals decides to terrorize the population with chemical weapons right around Christmas. He joins up with a suicidal comrade and the wreak havoc on the population of London. Maisie must work with Scotland Yard and the whole British Spy network to save countless individuals from harm. She also saves her employee's grief stricken wife from the horrors of an insane asylum and gets her put in another facility, much more suited to the problems and mental anguish of a grieving mother.

This is a book with a lot of action and suspense, twists and turns galore at the end. I have come to admire and enjoy Maisie Dobbs and her observations and ingenuity. I am looking forward to moving through the 1930's in the series as England again marches toward another war with Germany.
