This is another in the Maisie Dobbs Detective Mystery Series. Maisie has to investigate a business deal in a town that is devoted to hops picking in September of each year. There are gypsies and we learn that Maisie is part gypsy on her mother's side. Long covered-up murders unite the town in guilt and subservience to a local squire. The squire is a drunk and has the guilt of deaths on his conscience. Maisie ends up having to bury her beloved Simon Lynch, who was all but killed in the war.

This takes place in the late 1920s and is the best mystery yet in the series. In fact, each one has been better than the one before so far.

I am enjoying the reading and the immersion in that era.
