Summary of this Book...
This is a collection of eight humorous short stories and two novellas by a very talented science fiction writer, Keith Laumer. The stories encompass some his odder works during the 1960's.
This type of Book is good for...
Anybody who loves a good science fiction piece by a writer who never really got the attention he deserved, despite writing numerous novels, two incredible Sci/Fi series (Imperium and Retief), and several collections and anthologies.
I especially liked... | ||
The different and unique style he used. He wasn't what I would call a 'contemporary' or 'normal' writer, but I think the simplicity of it is what makes it stand out.
I didn't like... | ||
Some of the longer stories tend to switch back and forth and don't read as smoothly as much as this reader thinks they should.
When I finished reading this Book I wanted to...
Go out and get some of his older novels. He has more than I ever thought he did!
This Book made me feel...
that maybe I was born in the wrong decade! I think if I would have been born when he was (1925) and taken my own writing seriously enough, then I might have been successful. A lot of his writing mirrors my own, but it doesn't seem to stand out in this day and age.
The author of this Book...
Sadly passed away in 1993. He had a stroke in 1981 which severely limited his writing ability, although he did manage somewhat of a comeback. Unfortunately though, he didn't regain his old writing style, and his popularity slowly dwindles away.
I recommend this Book because...
Anybody who loves science fiction and stories of from the 1940's and 50's would love Keith Laumer's books. If you love those old black and white B movies that dealt with space aliens and space travel, you'll appreciate this author!
Further Comments... | ||
I'd never even heard of Keith Laumer until I picked up this book on a whim at a garage sale (for 50 cents). So when I googled him and found out just how prolific of a writer he was and how dedicated he was to his genre, I was very surprised! He wrote more than 70 books and received 4 Nebula Prize nominations and 2 Hugo Award nominations. He did some of best work during the 1960's.
