Summary of this Book...
This book goes through the year 1939, which was the year that led to World War II. Hitler was on the march. It was also arguably Hollywod's greatest year with movies such as Gone With The Wind, Mr. Smith Goes to Washington, The Wizard of Oz, Ninotchka, Goodbye Mr. Chips, The Women, Stagecoach and Wuthering Heights, to name but a few. I am going through the book day by day and reading about what films were in production, released and what was happening in the world. It is a shocking chronology to see what creativity was going on whilst the brutal Nazi thugs cut a swath through Europe. So, today is March 26 and I read in the book what happened in the world on March 26, 1939 and what movies came out. I am also trying to see more films that I may have overlooked. I am learning a lot and maybe this will also help me write more historical fiction. Plus, it is only a couple of pages reading a day that I do here and so far with a third of the year almost gone, I am keeping up with it splendidly. I have bought two movies to watch, Idiot's Delight and Moonlight that I intend to watch in the next few weeks. I love old movies and the book tells me that these two were hidden gems overwhelmed by the likes of Gone With The Wind.
