Summary of this Book...
This is a YA book written in literary style about a group of late teens struggling with secrets. Two sisters, one ex-stepbrother, and one friend battle severe problems together while refusing to speak their secrets aloud. The family is plagued by "The Accident Season". Every October, they get hurt... broken bones, burns, bruises, cuts, and even deaths. The story unfolds in a broad series of beautiful metaphors.
This type of Book is good for...
Really, I would think that adults would enjoy it more than teens, but I would have loved it as a teen myself, as I loved poetry and figurative language. The metaphors are exquisite.
I especially liked... | ||
Despite the devastating type of issues in the book, the use of metaphors makes the book appropriate for 13+. The atmosphere is great. The characters are thoroughly damaged. It is definitely unique. There is also nothing supernatural about the book, but the dreamy long-running metaphors give it a sense of dark magic. Nicely written all around.
Further Comments... | ||
Though never stated specifically that I recall, the book appears to be set in Ireland (where the author lives).
