Summary of this Book...
Before reviewing this, I went to find out what this modern-poetry guy was all about, since I knew nothing about him. It turns out, these poems are a social media phenomenon.
I especially liked... | ||
The titles: surviving oceans :14 And "Internet Trolls": "I give silence to your opinions/because in my opinion/you are wrong." That carries some weight of self-awareness and comfort with self.
I didn't like... | ||
Most of everything else. This collection is repetitive, with essentially identical poems with some new words thrown in. It feels old and rehashed with no revelations or new material; a few little nuggets perhaps, but mostly cheesy, egotistical, condescending bad statements thrown together as wisdom. Most of it implies that women need constant reassurance that they can do better, and they aren't doing better, and he that he appears to be 'the better'. He also implies several other misunderstandings and generalisations about women, but sufficed it to say: it reads like those pinterest boards of "deep thoughts" that no one ever thinks about again, because if they did, they'd have to start deleting things.
This Book made me feel...
Like reading some rupi kaur, lin manuel miranda or some john cooper clark.
I recommend this Book because...
It is a very simple and fast read. There are a few finds in here, but overall they are worth finding only because the length of the book makes it easy to do.
I don't recommend this Book because...
You'd do better to explore some Rupi Kaur.
Further Comments... | ||
Short poetry like this must have a surgical precision of depth and message; this comes off more like a shotgun spread of new age deep-thought fortune cookie statements.
