Summary of this Book...
This is a book that takes place in a small English town during the summer before WW I. Old prejudices and gossip prevails as people manipulate events to suit themselves. The arrival of a female Latin teacher causes a stir amongst the locals. Lots of intrigues are afoot as the newcomer, Beatrice Nash, makes her way in the world alone without her recently deceased father. I liked the story and the developing romance between Hugh and Beatrice. What I didn't enjoy was switching to the war experience because before that I felt like I was reading Beatrice's story. It was wrapped up sort of abruptly at the end and I felt that there was more to it than that with resolving her financial and career situations. For the most part I did enjoy the book - just wished there was more resolution and detail regarding Beatrice towards the end because I really did admire her character and fortitude.
