This gorgeously photographed movie is based on a novel that I had read. It is the story of a Lighthouse Keeper, who has come home from the violence and killing that was World War I. He has come home to Australia and is trying to find his place in a changing world. He ends up gravitating toward the solitary life of a Lighthouse Keeper on a remote island.

When I say remote, I mean he is the only one there until he marries. Then he and his wife are the only ones there for months at a time. The wife, who desperately wants a family, has two miscarriages. Then, one day a boat washes up with the body of a dead man and very alive infant. It seems like the answer to the wife's prayers. So, with a lot of misgivings (only on the part of the husband) they take on the care of the baby and at the wife's insistence, they pretend she is theirs.

The child has a mother, back at the mainland, who is grieving for the loss at sea of her husband and child. When the Lighthouse Keeper realizes this, he does his best to bridge the gap and make things right - as right as he can do.

I won't give away the rest of the plot.

The book was much better than the movie, as far as the story goes, but you cannot top this scenery. This was a very slow paced movie, though.

We have a rule at a half hour we quit if it is too slow. It was so slow Mr. hooves fell asleep about 15 minutes in. I kept watching because I knew basically what the plot was going to be.

But, make no mistake - this is a slow movie with a lot of long long pauses. I ended up fast forwarding quite a bit through the standing around stuff.

This movie cries out for a Director who knows how to move things along.

Still, I loved the scenery and the notion of this guy trying to do what was right and in the end pleasing no one. I could readily identify with his desires and motives.

is pretty good, but I thought the main part (the Lighthouse Keeper, Tom) was miscast. I just didn't get a lot from his performance. The women and the child were amazing, though.
