Summary of this Book...
This book is a must for anybody attempting to train their dog a new behavior. Yes! Old dogs can learn new tricks! It's just a matter of knowing how to train them. Burch and Bailey do a superb job of breaking the training strategies down into simple, manageable language. This book is the go to text for training dogs!
This type of Book is good for...
This book is excellent for training any behavior from toileting to complex tasks.
I especially liked...
I especially liked the section on "shaping" a dog's behavior. Shaping is where the trainer rewards the dog for behaviors that come close to the desired behavior thus bringing the dog to the desired behavior one step at a time.
I didn't like...
I didn't like some of the psychology in the book. As a former psychology major I understood "operant and classical conditioning" but can see how many would feel lost.
When I finished reading this Book I wanted to...
I wanted to become a dog trainer.
This Book made me feel...
It made me feel much more knowledgable about the behavior of dogs.
The author of this Book...
Mary S. Burch, Ph.D. and Jon S. Bailey, Ph.D.
I recommend this Book because...
i recommend it for anybody who will handle or train dogs.
I don't recommend this Book because...
I don't recommend it because it's somewhat technical, dry reading.
Further Comments...
This book is fantastic for people who will handle service dogs!
