Redemption Road is a powerful murder/mystery novel with what I thought was excess violence and too many murdered people. Still, it is an impressive story with exquisite characterization and an intricately twisted plot.

The setting is in North Carolina. Of the two detectives who are both in hot water while trying to discover who the serial killer is, Elizabeth Black is the main character with other characters such as Channing, the rape victim, and other victims and perpetrators sharing the spotlight with her. At times, it is difficult to figure out who is the victim and who is the perpetrator, but this is the strength of the story.

The story grabs the reader while sometimes confuses her or him with just about anything thrown into the mix. The book has some powerful insights into the human psyche and into the relationships between people.

I enjoyed reading the book greatly because it is not the average thriller a reader comes to expect and also because the author’s expertise in storytelling and the use of the language are exceptional.

This is a fairly new book, published on May 3, 2016. By the end of the year, it may win a few awards.

There are some disturbing scenes in the book, so be warned.
