Summary of this DVD... | ||
We got this movie from Netflix mailing disk. It is one that we saw about 26 years ago when it first came out to the theatre. We both had happy memories of the movie and were surprised that it was much darker than we remembered. Years have passed and people we loved have died, and on each side of the family there has been a suicide so we are hyper sensitive to that where we weren't as experienced there as now. The story is about a young teacher (Robin Williams) who comes to teach English as the exclusive Prep school he graduated from. He inspires his classmates to find out more about him and they look at the yearbook and realize he was in a club called the Dead Poets Society. Since they admire him, they emulate him and form their own club. He encourages his students to explore their interests and one does so, turning to acting, in defiance of his parents. Tragedy ensues and Robin Williams character (Mr. Keating) is fired in a campaign to force the students to give testimony against him. In the end, they defy their stance with an authority figure to give him a final salute of respect. The movie ended sadly, for me, anyway.
I especially liked... | ||
Robin Williams, Josh Charles, Robert Sean Leonard and Ethan Hawke. Their performances are all first rate. Josh Charles is Will from The Good Wife, only the younger (26 years younger) version.
I didn't like... | ||
the suicide because it hit too close to home.
I recommend this DVD because...
it is a good story, but be prepared for a violent and sad ending. I had forgotten that it was so at the end.
