Summary of this DVD...
Well, this was some movie. This is one of the few older movies that is not overrated (in my opinion). If anything, the raving about it, is a gross understatement.

I got this because of the new release of the sequel book. I had never seen the whole movie before, just excerpts on television.

This was moving, powerful and a beautiful story. The acting was superb. I got the 50th anniversary DVD to watch. It has a lot of extras, which I watched also.

It is the story of a small town Alabama lawyer named Atticus Finch. He is a single dad and is raising his two children, Jem and Scout with the help of his maid, Calpurnia. The town judge persuades Atticus to defend a black man accused of raping a white woman in her home. This is set in the 1930's so we know what fate would await him at the hands of the mob and it would be lynching.

The trial establishes clearly that the man, Tom Robinson, is innocent. He could not have committed the crime, but the good old boy ass jury finds him guilty as charged. The whole town knows the truth though and Tom is shot and killed trying to escape his fate. Atticus believes that an appeal would be successful.

His two children and most of the people of the town attended the trial so they all know the truth. A mysterious neighbor named Boo Radley figures throughout the story as an ominous presence. The father of the girl who was "attacked" is clearly the one who beat and raped his own daughter. He proves this by attacking and almost killing one of Atticus' children, who is saved by the kindest spirit imaginable.

Gregory Peck as Atticus Finch is a marvel. So are the children and so is Robert Duvall as Boo Radley. Duvall doesn't have any lines, but he conveys more with a look than most actors do in their entire careers.
This type of DVD is good for...
anyone who wants to watch a great film.
I especially liked...
Gregory Peck because his decency and character reminded me of my own Dad.
I recommend this DVD because...
it is one of the greatest films I've ever seen.
Further Comments...
This movie told a great story. Most movies now don't know how to tell a good story, let alone a great one.

I've seen two great films this year, this one and On the Waterfront, which was made in 1954. This one was released in 1963, the year President Kennedy was assasinated. This film is just amazing from start to finish. If it doesn't enlighten you and entertain you, than I think you are nuts.
