Summary of this Book...
Severus Snape meets with Narcissa Malfoy, Draco’s mother, and makes the Unbreakable Vow with her to watch over Draco while he carries out Voldemort’s orders. Dumbledore recruits Horace Slughorn as potions master, while Snape finally gets his heart’s desire and is named Defence Against the Dark Arts teacher. Harry is accepted into the NEWT potions class since Slughorn accepts a lower OWL pass mark than Snape. Harry has to make do with a second-hand potions textbook that once belonged to the Half-Blood Prince. The book is filled with comments and alterations, and by following them, Harry suddenly becomes the best potions student in the class. Dumbledore spends time with Harry reviewing his old memories of Voldemort. He tells Harry about how Voldemort survived. He tells Harry about dark magic involving ripping one’s soul and hiding it in an object. As long as the object survives, so does the wizard. Much of the book is actually devoted to this particular part of the plot. Harry finds himself attracted to Ginny Weasley, but how will Ron take this bit of news? This ending is profoundly sad. The death of a central character is heartwrenching, and the betrayal of someone trusted is a complete surprise.
This type of Book is good for...
Anyone who enjoyed the series. Adults and teens alike.
I especially liked... | ||
This is the first book that really isn’t written with younger children in mind. The first couple of books were aimed at the late tween/early teen market, but this is the first book that s really written with the intention of attracting the mid-teens at the bottom end of the market. The story is darker than the previous books – with the possible exception of Chamber of Secrets.
When I finished reading this Book I wanted to...
Jump straight in to the last book. JK has left so many questions unanswered at the end of this book, and she has left us with a whole set of new questions.
The author of this Book...
J K Rowling OBE. She was born in Yate, Gloucestershire, England in 1965. She graduated from University of Exeter in 1986 with a BA in French and Classics. Harry Potter has become the best-selling book series in history, and the films have become the highest-grossing film series ever. From her initial concept of Harry Potter in 1990, until the publication of Harry Potter and The Philosopher’s Stone in 1997, JK had survived on state benefits. She is now the UK’s best-selling living author with sales in excess of £238 million. In 2008, she was the twelfth richest woman in the UK.
I recommend this Book because...
JK’s storytelling goes from strength to strength
