This novel is the follow-up book to The Story Girl by Lucy Maud Montgomery. The plot is still about the teen group of Beverley and his brother Felix and their cousins Felicity, Cecily, Dan, Sara Stanley--the "Story Girl"--, hired-boy Peter, and neighbor Sara Ray.

In this second book, the teens create their own newspaper, called Our Magazine.

Here, the teens are in the process of growing up, and the novel ends as a relationship between Felicity and Peter grows and Sara Stanley leaves with his father to get a proper education.

The story is told from Beverley’s viewpoint as he looks back at his younger years. The mood is happy throughout but is tinged with sadness at the end, with Beverley’s feeling closer to Sara Stanley and her leaving him and their group. Without her, the group is not the same, and it scatters after a while since the teens are more interested in more of life's adult occupations than spending time with each other.

Serious character development takes place in this story. The incidents are told with amazing ease and a wonderful grasp of the writing craft.

it is a young adult book, happy and sad, and it reminded me, as a reader, how--way back when--my young friend-groups came together and then disintegrated when each one of us went his or her way.
