Summary of this Book...
The story begins with a young girl on a school assignment, looking through suitcases that have been left behind by patients kept in the psychiatric hospital Willard. The story flips back into the past, now looking at the lives of the patients in the 1800's. The hospital itself is not fiction, and the practices that went on there are memories lodged in my mind. The horribleness of what transpired is "justified", and supposedly makes the book redeemable, when the young girl is able to track down and reunite the granddaughter of a former patient, one who the reader was left wondering if she had lived or died. If you don't mind reading about how patients were treated to things like ice baths, which sometimes killed them, and solitary confinements, among other disturbing images, the writing is accomplished.
