The book starts with a marriage proposal that quickly turns into a murder. The killing is witnessed by two runaway teens that happened to break into the murdered woman's apartment and hide under the bed when they realize she has come home early. The story then moves to the middle of a court trial where the heroine in the first book (this is the second), Jessica Ford, takes on a spot on a prestigious criminal defense team. Her now ex-boyfriend, Mark Ryan, with the Secret Service has a hard time keeping her safe since there are chances the media attention might alert someone who might want her dead from the situations she escaped in the first book. It follows this story line until I almost forgot about the first and then jump back to the murder.

It's a mix of criminal suspense, crime, and romance.

The author had a lot of different angles to work.

I didn't like all the different angles. The book starts with one story, then doesn't come back around to it until 100 or more pages. Then it tries to weave in the emotional thread between Jessica and Mark. It was never cohesive.

I wanted to mark down all the 'don't write this way' items that the book managed to include.

If you are looking for a criminal mystery that is light with romantic aspects, this might be good way to spend some time. If you don't mind looking past some gaps in the story and the feeling that there wasn't much research done than this would fit the bill.

If you are looking for a criminal mystery that is believable and well presented I wouldn't recommend this book. I don't think starting with one piece of the story and then not returning to it until a third into the book was an error.

Unfortunately, there were many things I didn't like about this book. The main character interjected a one sentence thought into almost every scene, which took the reader out of the moment and slowed down the action. There were too many descriptions of everything, including the appearances of less than minor characters, and every leaf on every tree in each scene (maybe I exaggerate a bit but I actually started scanning pages-I never do that). The main character hacked into her job's Human Resources files and other privately protected applications "because it was something she was good at doing." Not a single mention of this ability was hinted at anywhere else prior to her having to get to the files. Really? She's a lawyer. How convenient. I didn't buy it or the other numerous things that just conveniently happened to move the story along. I will not pick up the third book in this series, unless I keep a notepad to mark down the things to avoid while I'm writing.
