Betts Mcgee is engaged to J.D. Langley. They both come from prominent famlies in Charleston. Her family is one of merchants and his is one of land owners. His mother, Louisa doesn't approve. She says things that cause the death of Betts' mother. An estrangement ensues and J.D. marries another woman.

About 18 years later, Betts, now a successful developer in New York, is sent on assignment to work on the Bulls Island project. J.D. is heavily involved. Lots of secrets from the past are revealed.

I won't give away the plot, but Betts and J.D. have never gotten over each other.

anyone who enjoys a humorous book set in the low country. This one was a pretty good effort.

the way Betts and Louisa interact after years of not seeing each other.

all of the violence and death toward the end. It was wrapped up too neatly with a bow for me.

knows how to tell a good story. This book was better than her latest effort, but not as good as last year's Porch Lights.

I would recommend this book as it was an engaging read. It is not a great book and the ending was a bit slapped together, but that seems to be the case with a lot of novels these days.

It filled the time with interesting reading. I bought it used so I can't really find much to complain about.
