Summary of this DVD... | ||
This is a vintage (1960) movie with Spencer Tracy, Fredric March and Gene Kelly. It is based on the famous trial pitting evolution against creationism. Spencer Tracy plays the part based on Clarence Darrow and March plays the part based on William Jennings Bryan. Gene Kelly is an obnoxious reporter from Baltimore, covering the trial.
This type of DVD is good for...
someone like me who is trying to see as much of Spencer Tracy's work as possible to see if I agree with the thing about him being the greatest actor in the history of film.
I especially liked... | ||
Dick York in the role of the teacher who is jailed for teaching evolution to his class in a Tennessee town. Although I did not care for him in Bewitched (he was the first Darrin), he was very good here and so was Gene Kelly.
I didn't like... | ||
Fredric March. I thought he was over made up and over acted his part. I don't think I've ever seen him before and I do not care for him.
The cast of this DVD... | ||
was pretty darned good. I recognized a lot of people who ended up on The Andy Griffith show, oddly enough. Maybe they were the stock cast for a small southern town.
I recommend this DVD because...
it is timely with the role of the press being challenged as bias. I also thought that Spencer Tracy gave a very powerful, understated performance while March chewed up the scenery with his part.
