Summary of this Book...
Barry Dunbar is a self-righteous young missionary preacher living in Canada. When World War I breaks out, he and his father sign up to the army. He is assigned as the battalion's chaplain or 'Sky Pilot,' as the army boys' slang goes. The soldiers despise him because he polices them. He knows he isn't doing well and wants to change. War changes him.
This type of Book is good for...
Those who enjoy moral struggles, imperfect characters, war books, heroism/patriotism.
I especially liked... | ||
Barry Dunbar isn't perfect. He changes. The ending is realistic, it isn't 'happily ever after' but it leaves the reader satisfied.
I didn't like... | ||
Took a long time to actually start the story. Too much frippery at the beginning that didn't help the plot at all. The author is too much in the book. He needs to step out of it and let the characters tell the story. The characters are too perfect, unrealistic. They need some good, nasty flaws. Barry came across as a bit weak.
When I finished reading this Book I wanted to...
slap Ralph Connor and rewrite the book.
This Book made me feel...
thankful to the war boys.
The author of this Book...
steps in too much. | ||
I recommend this Book because...
It is a good look into human personality, war and true heroism. It is also very emotional.
Further Comments... | ||
Got some good romance in it.
