Summary of this Book...
Lou Schuler, Alwyn Cosgrove, and Cassandra Forsythe have compiled a book that gets women off the couch and into weightlifting. The advice in this book is sound and safe.
Lou Schuler's fun and easy to read narrative strings the book together and leads readers from chapter to chapter without intimidating newbies to the gym.
This type of Book is good for...
Women interested in weightlifting at all levels of experience. Total beginners receive a solid introduction to weightlifting. Experienced lifters get reminded of some fundamental techniques and can learn one or two or more new things.
I especially liked...
The workout programs by Alwyn Cosgrove. The book makes it easy for beginners and lifters who haven't been regularly active to build a solid strength foundation for total body fitness and conditioning.
I didn't like...
The recipes. Sorry, Cassandra. I'm not going to cook something that takes me more than twenty minutes. Ever. Except for pulled pork, but besides the cooking time it takes me all but two minutes to set it up.
When I finished reading this Book I wanted to...
I got into the gym and followed the break in program. Even with 20+ years of weightlifting experience the program forced me to do exercises that I naturally avoid. Push-ups anyone?
This Book made me feel...
Happy to know that as long as I can lift a dumbbell, I will be able to stay physically fit.
The author of this Book...
Lou Schuler has written several fitness books and he is also a writer for Men's Health. His book is peppered with humorous anecdotes that enrich the reading experience without being cheesy or out of place. He is very much like the jovial guys you can meet at the gym. Packed with muscles, but totally friendly and always happy to help out a newbie to find their way around.
I recommend this Book because...
I recommend this book because it teaches the value of resistance training to women without ever being condescending. Almost all exercises are shown with pictures and meticulously explained. The only exercises that don't get an image are minor variations on a shown technique.
I don't recommend this Book because...
I recommend this book without any reservations. Just about the recipes ... you be the judge of it.
Further Comments...
If you're curious, if you always wanted to know how to get started, if you're an old gym rat, this book has something for you. I did wonders for my motivation and fitness.
