Esmeralda the Gypsy, has predicted that Arriman the Awful that someone more black will replace him. Arriman looks no one comes so he assumes that he must marry so that his child will be the blackest in the North. His secretary, Mr Leadbetter has set up a contest. Who ever of the black witches in Todcaster will do the Blackest magic will become Arriman's bride.
Belladonna lives in Todcaster, but she is not a black witch though she desires to be one. She is a white witch, hangs around all the black witches hoping that the blackness will rub off on her. When the announcement in made that Arriman the handsome will chose his bride. Belladonna falls in love with him.
