What I appreciated most about this book is that the course does not "water down" the terminology. While young children may not remember all scientific terms presented, they are certain to grasp the information in their own way and learn from it. The book offers beautiful photos and in-depth descriptions of the animals presented. The lab activities are fun and educational (such as building a bird house and feeder), and there are also free notebook pages available through the publisher to help reinforce the material learned.

This course is unique in that it does not sacrifice scientific terminology for the sake of entertaining young children. There is a wealth of information in this book, along with fascinating facts, experiments, and breathtaking photos. Having homeschooled my children for over seven years, I can honestly say that this has been my favorite elementary science course we have used so far.

The course is intended to be used in grades 3-6, but I would not hesitate to place it in older hands of junior high and/or high school students. I, too, learned many things while teaching this course and developed a greater appreciation for all flying creatures. As with any unit study, there is freedom to "beef up" the content with older students by adding research reports and more in-depth experiments than what is offered in the book for younger students.
