Alanna and her twin brother Thom are soon to be sent away to their respective "schools" Alanna will go to a "deportment" school to learn how to be a proper lady of the court.(this school also teaches the beginnings of sorcery to young mages) And her brother Thom will go to the capital and learn how to be a knight. At least that is what their indifferent father (a lord) has planned for them. But these two twins have much different plans for themselves. Alanna is a fiery young spirit and has always been talented with arms and general fighting. On the other hand Thom is more of a quiet boy prefering to stay home and read sorcery books and dreams of becoming a great mage. So when it comes time for them to leave home Alanna and Thom switch places! Alanna cuts her hair and pretends to be a boy so she can eventually become a knight. And Thom goes to the Sorcery section of the school. The rest of the book is about all of Alanna's adventures and struggles hiding her sex from an entire court of people.

Everyone! I first read this when I was 7 and still enjoying re-reading it today

The character development, how Alanna changes and matures. I also like the characters in general, George the thief is my favorite

Go and do exactly what Alanna did...switch with my brother and go to knight school!

I so great! Tamora Pierce is by far my favorite author overall. Everyone of her books get better and better and she is still writing!!
